Patient Education

Dr. Bodensteiner emphasizing the importance of Patient Education

Patient education is very important and historically has not been at the forefront of health education. Health education about dental care and oral health is underrepresented.

Astonishing statistics point to dental care as a lesser priority that cable service and other short-term beauty services. This information is good to understand and informs us there is a continual need for patient education; this is why we give our patients a clear understanding of what is happening inside their mouths.

We educate patients about the importance of teeth function and the correlation between chewing comfortably and properly in order to get the required nutrients for overall health.

In addition, we inform our patients of the mouth-body connection. Bacteria in the oral cavity (mouth) can be released into the body, causing body ailments. Dental disease is caused from cavities and decay in teeth. Periodontal disease is caused from bacteria infecting gum and bone. Gums cover the bone that holds teeth in place.

People can lose teeth from decay OR from infected gums. Bone loss occurs when the bone becomes infected, subsequently, teeth may become loose and fall out.

Periodontitis is common but fairly preventable and can be caused by poor dental hygiene. It’s a risk factor for heart and lung diseases. Symptoms include swollen, red, and tender gums.

Treatment includes professionally cleaning the pockets around teeth to prevent damage to surrounding bone. Advanced cases may require surgery.
